How Much Sugar is in your food and drinks?

Posted on 2/6/2023 by Evan
How Much Sugar is in your food and drinks?Sugar is a sweet-tasting carbohydrate. The main types include lactose, fructose, and sucrose. Cells in the body require glucose, but too much is harmful. Added sugars have no nutritional value. They are just calories that lead to added weight and even obesity. Added sugar is contained in most foods and drinks in the market. Added sugars have zero benefits to body health, and a reduced intake is encouraged by the World Health Organization.

Sugar and its effects

A teaspoon of sugar is approximately four grams. The recommended intake of free sugars is six teaspoons for women and nine teaspoons for men. That is equal to 24 grams for women and 36 grams for men. Some foods with high sugar content include chocolate bars, soft drinks such as sprite, and breakfast cereals. These free sugar products could lead to increased sugar intake in a person. Having to quit or avoid taking them is essential for your health. Eating fruits, milk and greens is recommended. The sugar in these is harmless. Fruits such as mangoes are sweet and have low sugar content.

Risks

Doctors and researchers have urged people to cut down on added sugar intake. Added sugar has a series of side effects and diseases. The most common is obesity. Obesity has been proven to be caused by the intake of added sugars. Drinking sweetened soda and chocolate bars are most likely to lead to obesity. Heart diseases are another effect of sugars. Most people are urged to take up a healthy diet and exercise. Added sugars have a relationship with increased cardiovascular disease mortality. Type 2 diabetes is another disease that can be gotten from added sugars. Sugar is not the direct cause of diabetes. However, overweight people tend to have a high uptake of added sugars, which could cause diabetes.
