Dental X-Ray and their Functions

Posted on 7/24/2023 by Evan
Dental X-Ray and their FunctionsDentists rely upon dental X-rays to assess and address oral health issues. They provide a comprehensive examination of the structures of the teeth, bones, and soft tissues in the mouth, enabling dentists to spot troubles that may not be evident with just visual scrutiny. They include:

Bite Recordings

Bitewing radiographs are the most common type of dental radiograph. Its functions are mainly to detect cavities between teeth and to analyze the health of the bone that supports the teeth. In addition, bitewing X-rays also show the structure of the crowns of the upper and lower teeth and the layers of bone between them.

Periapical Radiographs

Periapical radiographs show the entire tooth from the apex of the root to the apex of the crown. They are used to diagnose dental problems such as cysts, impacted teeth, and abscesses. Therefore, they are mainly used to study the structure of the tooth and the surrounding bone tissue.

Panoramic Radiographs

Panoramic X-rays provide a wide view of the entire mouth. They show all the teeth of the upper and lower jaw, the jaw joints (TMJ), and the sinuses. Panoramic X-rays are used to diagnose jaw problems, impacted teeth, and other issues that require a full view of the mouth.

Occlusal radiographs

Occlusal radiographs are used to examine the bite of the teeth. Its function is to show the entire structure of the dental arch in the upper or lower jaw. Therefore, using it can help identify mouth-related issues such as cleft palate, extra teeth, cysts, or missing teeth.

Cone Beam Computed Tomography (DVT)

CBCT scans are three-dimensional images of the mouth and jaw. Complex analysis of dental treatments such as dental implants, orthodontics, and oral surgery can be done using these. CBCT scans provide useful and detailed images of teeth, bone, and soft tissue, allowing dentists to diagnose and plan treatment with a high level of accuracy.

Final Thoughts

Different types of dental X-rays serve different purposes, from detecting tooth decay to planning complex dental procedures. Our dentist may propose one or more of these X-rays depending on your special needs. Periodic dental X-rays are a fundamental aspect of keeping good oral health. Therefore, be sure to reach out and follow our dentist's recommendations for X-rays and other preventative measures.
