One of the best things about toothpaste is that you can formulate it to meet your most crucial dental needs. Here are some types of toothpaste that can up your dental hygiene game.

If You Worry About Cavities

Cavities are quite common. They are the most common non-infectious disease you can get. By the time you reach retirement age, 90 percent of people have at least one cavity. If at all possible, you need to try and prevent cavities because even small cavities can weaken your teeth.

If you want to be sure you are doing all you can to fight cavities, you can choose a toothpaste with specific additives. Look for a toothpaste that has fluoride and stannous fluoride to give you maximum cavity-fighting protection. You may also want to look for pyrophosphate and zinc citrate in your toothpaste because these two ingredients fight tartar, which is a hard, crusty layer on your teeth and gums that can only be removed by a dental hygienist. That way, you give your teeth a good chance to repel the bacteria that cause cavities.

If You Have Sensitive Teeth

About one in five adults have sensitive teeth, which means they may feel pain when they eat hot or cold foods. If you have sensitive teeth, look for toothpaste that can both build up your tooth enamel and work to make your nerve endings less sensitive. Look for a toothpaste with stannous fluoride to help rebuild tooth enamel and potassium nitrate to help reduce your nerve sensitivity to hot and cold foods.

If You Need to Whiten Your Teeth

If you want to whiten your teeth a few shades, you can look for a toothpaste that contains tooth-whitening agents. Baking soda and hydrogen peroxide are two great ingredients to whiten your teeth. You can also look for potassium nitrate or fluoride in your toothpaste to strengthen your tooth enamel as you are whitening your teeth.
