Can I Change Out My Fillings?

Dental fillings have come a long way in the last few decades, and it may be time to think about changing them. Here are some reasons you may want to change out your dental fillings.

Reasons You May Want New Fillings

Sometimes, older dental fillings can be more trouble than they are worth. These are some reasons you may need new fillings.

If Your Fillings Contain Mercury

Older dental amalgam fillings contain mercury. If you had your cavities filled from the 1960s through much of the remainder of the 20th century, there is a good chance your dental amalgam fillings contain mercury. If you are experiencing issues with your mercury fillings, or your doctor has suggested you remove them, it is a good idea to have the filling replaced.

If Your Filling Falls Out

As people age, older dental amalgam fillings can often become brittle, causing them to fall out, crack, or chip. You can have your filling replaced, and your tooth will be as good as new.

If You Get a New Cavity

While it is rare, there are occasions when a tooth you have a filling in can develop a cavity, but usually not in the same area as the original cavity. In this case, you may choose to have your old filling removed and get two new fillings.

If Your Filling Becomes Damaged

Damaged fillings happen quite often if you have bruxism. This condition happens when you clench or grind your teeth during sleep. Bruxism can damage your teeth, including chipping, cracking, or breaking. You can also crack, chip, or break other dental work, including veneers, crowns, or bridges. After you have your repair work done on your teeth, you may want to think about wearing a guard at night to protect your teeth from bruxism.
