Ways to Decrease Sensitivity so You Can Enjoy Summer Treats

However, if you have sensitive teeth, these treats can be a painful experience. Teeth sensitivity is a common problem that can be caused by a variety of factors, including:

•  Receding gums: As gums recede, the dentin, the layer of the tooth beneath the enamel, becomes exposed. Dentin is more porous than enamel and contains microscopic tubules that lead directly to the nerve of the tooth. When these tubules are exposed to cold, heat, or sweet foods, they can send a painful signal to the nerve.
•  Worn enamel: Enamel is the hard outer layer of the tooth that protects it from damage. Over time, enamel can wear down due to factors such as brushing too hard, grinding your teeth, or consuming acidic foods and drinks. When enamel is worn down, the dentin beneath it becomes exposed, leading to sensitivity.
•  Cracked or chipped teeth: Cracks or chips in the tooth can expose the dentin and nerve, leading to sensitivity.
•  Tooth decay: Tooth decay can also cause sensitivity by damaging the enamel and dentin.

If you have sensitive teeth, there are a few things you can do to decrease the pain and enjoy your summer treats:

•  Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and toothpaste for sensitive teeth. Hard-bristled toothbrushes and abrasive toothpastes can further wear down your enamel, making your teeth more sensitive.
•  Avoid acidic foods and drinks. Acidic foods and drinks, such as citrus fruits, sodas, and sports drinks, can erode your enamel and make your teeth more sensitive.
•  Use a straw when drinking cold beverages. This will help to keep the cold liquid away from your teeth.
•  Apply a desensitizing toothpaste. Desensitizing toothpastes contain ingredients that can help to block the tubules in your dentin, making your teeth less sensitive.
•  See your dentist for a professional fluoride treatment. Fluoride can help to strengthen your enamel and make your teeth less sensitive.
•  Consider using a mouth guard. If you grind your teeth at night, a mouth guard can help to protect your teeth from further damage and reduce sensitivity.

By following these tips, you can reduce your teeth sensitivity and enjoy your summer treats without pain. If you have any concerns about your teeth sensitivity, please see your dentist for a checkup.
