Emergency Dentistry
Any type of emergency can happen. This includes a dental emergency. Any significant injury to the mouth, face or throat can be considered a dental trauma or dental emergency. Injuries to those parts of the body can easily damage the teeth and gums. It could affect the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), tooth sockets, mandible, or the teeth themselves. Soft tissues can be impacted as well, including the tongue, cheeks, and gums.
While assessing the damage on their own, patients should look for indications of serious injury. Chipped teeth are generally easy to spot because the tooth surface will feel rough to the tongue and have a missing section when looked at in the mirror. In some cases, they may notice a tooth moving in its socket because it has been knocked loose or even an empty socket where a tooth has been knocked out.
