Model of mouth with dental crowns at Wilson DentistryWhen a tooth gets damaged, whether from tooth decay or injury, there are many different restoration options available.

However, if a tooth is severely damaged, then you may not be a candidate for a traditional dental filling.

In these cases, it may be necessary to get a dental crown placed over the affected tooth.

Dental crowns (or tooth crowns), also known as "caps," are a special type of dental restoration that allow you to maintain your own natural tooth instead of requiring a tooth extraction and a prosthesis (such as a bridge, implant, or denture).

When it comes to treating damaged teeth, we here at Wilson Dentistry in Katy, TX can help you decide if a dental crown is the best option for you.

What Is a Dental Crown?

Dental crowns, or caps, are a type of restoration that help strengthen and protect a damaged tooth.

This prosthesis goes over your own tooth and is a fantastic option for a patient who may need more than just a filling in the affected tooth.

Crowns come in a wide variety of materials, ranging from metal to ceramic and even porcelain or resin. Not only can they help make the affected tooth stronger and allow you to use it with comfort and ease, it can also dramatically improve the appearance of your smile, as well.

Who Might Benefit from a Tooth Crown?

There are many reasons why a person may need a dental crown.
•  Sometimes a person may have tooth decay that is so advanced, a filling cannot properly repair it.
•  Other times, a tooth may become damaged or cracked (whether from injury or infection) and needs a crown to restore it.
•  Crowns can help make a small or misshapen tooth appear more attractive while also strengthening them and making them more durable.
•  We may also advise that a patient get a crown after a root canal procedure.
Crowns can go over a dental implant or help complete a dental bridge as well.
•  We may recommend a crown to a patient who has a tooth that may have been discolored and stained.

Getting Fitted With a Dental Crown

Getting fitted with a dental crown can take several appointments with our dentist, as it may be necessary to have you return to help ensure a comfortable and secure fit.

Typically, though, a crown can be fitted in as little as two appointments (though it can vary on a case-by-case basis, depending on the needs of the patient).

The first appointment usually requires a thorough examination of the tooth.

The tooth will be filed down to help prepare it for the restoration.

Then we make an impression of the tooth (and sometimes the surrounding teeth) and send that impression to our lab to begin the process of making your crown.

While we wait for your permanent crown, we may fit you with a temporary crown.

Once your crown is ready, we will have you return for a fitting. Once we are satisfied with the shape and fit of the crown, we will then bond it to your tooth.

How Do I Take Care of a Crown?

It is important to remember to take good care of your crown and treat it like you would take care of your other teeth.

You will want to be sure to follow all our aftercare instructions to help ensure the longevity of your crown.

If you take proper care of it, you can generally expect the crown to last anywhere between five to fifteen years.
