What Happens During a Tooth Extraction?
The process of extracting a tooth can vary depending on the patient. The most common types of extractions are simple extractions and surgical extractions.
When your tooth is extracted, it is removed from the socket in your bone.
Simple extractions are a little bit easier. If you need to pull a visible tooth from the mouth, then we can use instruments called an elevator and a pair of forceps to help remove the tooth from your mouth, without any surgical tools.
Occasionally, patients may present with more complex issues. If you happen to have a tooth that has broken or is not yet visible in your mouth, our oral surgeons will need to create an incision to remove the tooth surgically.
When Is it Necessary to Extract a Tooth?
The most common reason people need to get their teeth removed is that they have a pair of wisdom teeth that have become impacted.
People also may need tooth extraction because they have decay or infection in their teeth, which is likely to spread.
Other times, people may have too many teeth in their mouth for them to all fit comfortably, and they need to have some of them removed.

Preparing Before Your Tooth Extraction
The following are some things our professionals may do to better prepare you for your procedure:

Before you get your tooth removed, your dentist will likely need to give you an x-ray to judge the approach they should use.

If you have a simple extraction, you will only receive a local anesthetic. However, if you do need a surgical extraction, you will go under general anesthesia.

If you know that you will be going under anesthesia, you must have someone else drive you to your procedure because it will still be in your system after it is over. |
How to Speed Up Your Recovery After a Tooth Extraction
The most important thing you need to do after you have a tooth extracted is keep the area cleaned thoroughly. The inside of your mouth can be a great breeding ground for bacteria and infection. For twenty-four hours after your extraction, do not smoke at all. Our dentist will go over additional instructions and answer any questions you have post procedure.
