Are you considering getting braces for yourself or your family member?

Due to technological advancements in the dentistry field, several methods of treatments are available, although traditional metal braces are still common and effective.

Traditional braces are a popular and trusted orthodontic treatment option for correcting teeth and jaws.

At Wilson Dentistry in Katy, TX, our experienced dentist strives to ensure the successful installation of traditional metal braces.

They provide our clients with a short class on how best to care for the metal braces to ensure they are always in top shape.

Our modern and well-maintained equipment greatly impacts the client's treatment outcome and helps ensure they restore their lost smile.

Who Needs Traditional Metal Braces?

Traditional metal braces can be used to correct crowded teeth, crooked teeth, or a malocclusion (misaligned bite).

Many of these issues can worsen over time, resulting in severe complications for your oral health. Some of these complications include:
•  Dental caries (tooth decay)
•  Gum disease
•  Temporomandibular joint disorders (TMJ/TMD)
•  Tooth loss
•  Problems chewing or speaking
•  Severely worn down teeth

Straightening your teeth can give you a more beautiful smile and prevent many of these complications.

During a consultation appointment, our dentist will perform a diagnostic exam to determine if you or your child need orthodontic treatment.

How Do Braces Work?

Traditional metal braces straighten teeth by exerting pressure on the crooked teeth to revert them to the right position.

When the metal braces exert force through the gum membrane, they trigger osteoclast cell release, breaking down and reabsorbing bone tissue from the tooth side.

This forces the tooth to move gradually, creating a slight gap in the old position.

The gap on the tooth's opposite side triggers osteoblast cells to release regenerating bone tissue that helps secure the tooth to the new position.

Advantages of Metal Braces

Traditional braces are still used in modern orthodontics because they are often the most effective way to treat extreme overcrowding and malocclusions.

When compared to other appliances, they give us greater control over the incremental movement of certain teeth.

Traditional braces are also one of the most cost-effective treatments available today.

Some patients are concerned with the aesthetics of their appliance. While clear aligner trays and lingual braces are more aesthetically pleasing, they are usually less effective options for complicated problems. Modern braces are also more visually appealing than ever before due to smaller brackets and thinner wires.

How Long Does it Take to Put Braces On?

A traditional metal braces procedure does not last long. You can continue your normal daily tasks and spare a few hours for the braces installation procedure.

In most cases, the entire procedure takes one to two hours. It includes cleaning and drying the teeth to ensure the braces are well secured. However, the duration it takes is determined by the type of braces being installed.

How Long Do You Have to Wear Braces?

A complete orthodontic treatment takes up to 24 months.

Some patients will need the braces for less than 12 months, while others will need to wear them for up to three years.

How Old Do You Have to Be to Get Braces?

Some kids start orthodontic treatment at the age of six. The best age to get dental braces is between eight and 14 years when the mouth and teeth are conducive for orthodontic treatment.

Caring for Your Metal Braces

It is very important to maintain good oral hygiene during orthodontic treatment. The brackets of traditional braces are bonded to the front surfaces of your teeth, making it a bit of challenge to properly clean these areas. The wire that connects the brackets can also make it more difficult to floss.

To prevent plaque and tartar from collecting around the brackets, pay special attention to these areas while brushing.

Be sure to use an ADA-approved toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste.

We may also provide you with a special type of floss that is easier to thread between your teeth and the wire.

For added protection, you may want to consider an anti-bacterial mouth rinse.

Life After Metal Braces

Once your teeth are in the proper position, it is important to protect your investment. Unfortunately, your teeth can shift back out of alignment over time. Wearing a retainer following your treatment can prevent this problem from occurring.

We offer a few different retainers depending on your preferences. Many patients choose a clear plastic retainer similar to aligner trays. Others use a more traditional appliance made from acrylic and a thin metal wire.

What Can You Eat and Not Eat with Braces?

You can enjoy several types of foods with your dental braces on.

Common foods include pasta, fruits, casseroles, mashed potatoes, soups, soft veggies, pizza, soft bread, meat with no bones, and dairy products.

Eating sticky and crunchy foods can loosen the brackets and wires. Avoid nuts, popcorn, potato chips, gum, crunchy veggies, pizza crust, and beef jerky.
